Pre-Season
This year, the Maple Leafs preseason was relatively successful. This is despite the injuries that they were riddled with. The teams they met this preseason were the Senators, Canadiens, and Red Wings; they were unable to beat the Senators but won every game against Canadiens and Red Wings.
Unfortunately, due to the injuries mentioned, the Leafs were not in their best shape for the first regular season game. Captain Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and William Nylander were just a few of the injured players on this roster. However, some good comes from having your top line out during preseason: the prospects that get to take their places. Thankfully for Leafs fans, some of their prospects will be well-known talents. Easton Cowan and Nick Robertson were two of the most notable standouts.
Cowan is a 2005-born prospect drafted #28 overall in the 2023 entry draft. He's spent his last few years on the highly dominant London Knights in the OHL. Though undersized at 5 ft 8, he has shown off his skills at a higher level during this preseason, and prospect game. While his game is a lot more focused on playmaking he has made it on the scoresheet. His points during the pre-seasons were 2 assists in 5 games.
Robertson is a bit older, a 2001-born player who's been spending his last two seasons bouncing up and down from the Leafs to their AHL team, the Marlies. He spent the end of last year being a healthy scratch most of the time, and because of this, many fans questioned his ability to be an NHL player; however, this preseason, he has come with a fire lit under him. After making a strange and unnecessary move in his first preseason game that injured fellow teammate William Nylander, he received a lot of backlash. However, Roberston continued to play the best game he could, scoring an impressive 5 goals in his 4 preseason games.
With this information, the Leafs announced that Cowan would not be in the lineup and was returned to the OHL. While Robertson did stay with the Leafs. However, he sustained an upper-body injury during his last preseason game. Will not be returning for opening night.
October 9th
This game was not a positive experience for Leafs fans. The Leafs did not score a single goal, breaking their non-shutout streak of 227 games. While the Leafs outshot Montreal 48-27, Montreal's goalie performed incredibly well. Toronto's goalie, Antony Stolarz, also showed promise, only allowing 1 goal on 27 shots. The players were getting good chances, but Montreal's goalie carried his team to victory. The final score was 1-0 for Montreal.
October 10th
The Leafs played the New Jersey Devils, and Despite the lack of recovery time from the night before, the Leafs won this game with a score of 4-2. While three of the Leafs' core four (Marner, Matthews, Nylander) failed to make the scoresheet in this game, Tavares scored a goal early in this game. However, the absolute superstar of the Toronto Maple Leafs continues to be off-season addition Max Pacioretty; he scored the opening goal in this game. The players that tend to stay off the score sheet, like Bobby Mcman and Steven Lorentz, found their way on it tonight.
Another key player in the game is notably the goalie for the Leafs, who was making his NHL debut. Dennis Hileby is a 23-year-old Swedish goaltender with a 0.917% save percentage. He blocked 22 of the 24 shots he faced and maintained solid positioning during the Devil's several power plays.
October 12th:
The Leafs returned after a few days off and won against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Half of the Leaf's core four finally clicked well this game; Tavares was absent, and Matthews did not appear on the score sheet, but Mitch Marner and William Nylander carried the core four with three goals and two assists between them. Another notable name for this game was Matthew Knies.
Knies is a 21-year-old 57th overall pick by the Leafs. He was drafted in 2021 but debuted in the 2022-2023 season. That season, he only played three games. Last year, however, Knies played 80 games, scoring fifteen goals and twenty assists. In the game against the Penguins, Knies scored his first goal of the season and was on the ice for all the other goals. He was named the second star of the game.
In closing, the Maple Leafs faced a challenging start to their season, marked by injuries to key players and a mix of highs and lows in their performance. Despite the setback of a shutout loss against Montreal, the team showed promise in their victories over New Jersey, and Pittsburgh. They also showcase the promise of new additions like Max Pacioretty and promising young talents like Knies and Robertson. In their preseason and prospect games, the Leafs have also showcased their future talents like Cowan and Minten.
The future looks bright despite having to steer these early barriers, fans can take comfort in the roster's future stars, as well as the skill and depth in their current roster. With hopes of a swift recovery for their core players, the team is poised to capitalize on its strengths and make a strong push in the coming games. The season is still young, and the excitement surrounding the Maple Leafs remains palpable as they work to find their rhythm and reclaim their place among the league's elite.
