On January 6th, 2025 news article headlines across the country buzzed with the message that after over nine years, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau had resigned (Brennan). This decision has sent ripples through the political landscape, leaving many Canadians wondering about the near political future of their country.
The Liberal Party of Canada remains in power, yet they must hold a leadership race to choose a new leader. Chrystia Freeland, current Deputy Prime Minister and potential candidate holds weight in Canadian politics as well as Mark Carney, Former Governor of the Bank of Canada with extensive economic experience. Their politics are constantly controversial, with Freeland’s support for carbon pricing to combat climate change facing criticism for harming businesses along with Carney’s emphasis on ‘green finance’ sparking controversy within the party.
Regardless of who is elected to be the leader of the Liberal Party the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Pollievre will likely challenge the sitting government in the next election. As the Liberal Party prepares for a new leader and the Conservative Party prepares for the next election, Canadians will be watching closely to observe how the disruption in leadership shapes future politics.
