Course Selection

Course selection is an important thing to consider when in high school; it impacts your future career options, lifestyle, and workload. Here is a short guide summarizing how you should pick courses.

When picking your course selections, you must consider what you want to do after high school and how the courses you are picking will align with those aspirations. You can research courses required for the area you’re interested in studying via your blueprint. You can also review your extracurricular activities; will you be able to balance both?

Whilst it is great to take advantage of all the new classes offered at Citadel that you are unfamiliar with, you must also be realistic that you may find it difficult to take a course with no experience. Aim to take courses that you know you have skill, experience, and talent in. On the other hand, some classes you take will be necessary credits to pass high school, so you must also consider if your courses correspond with the credits you need to pass high school.

On a final note, be sensible with the level of competency you have when picking courses. Ib can be a challenging course, where you must have excellent time management and adaptability. What is special about Citadel is that they offer the opportunity to take IB without taking the full diploma. This means you can still take IB courses you are very confident in without the pressure of taking courses you are not. If you decide to take it, it is not set in stone - if you find the class too challenging, it is easy to transfer your IB class to a regular class and you will still get the credits.

The IB coordinator of Citadel, Heather Michael, replied when asked about the advantages and challenges of taking IB, “Sometimes the ebb and flow of IB is hard for students as they can have very busy times. One of the benefits though is that students get to focus on learning from an international perspective and, when they are finished, if they want to go to university, they can get credit in university for their IB courses.”
