Hurricanes Helene and Milton have unleashed a wave of destruction across Florida, taking over 230 lives (Shapiro et al.), and forcing widespread evacuations in the wake of their devastating aftermath. Helene made landfall on September 26, 2024, in northwestern Florida as a Category 4 hurricane and was catastrophic, causing over $200 billion in damages to properties and infrastructure (Rafferty and Zehnder). Its high winds and flooding made it the fourth deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. since 1950. Fourteen days later, Milton hit the coast as a Category 3 hurricane, having weakened from its initial Category 5 strength in the Gulf of Mexico. Before this, mandatory evacuation orders were issued, and Florida’s Attorney General, Ashley Moody, warned Floridians who are not evacuating that “you probably need to write your name in permanent marker on your arm so that people know who you are when they get to you afterwards”, implying they may not survive the storm (McShane).

In response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, state and federal agencies mobilized rescue teams, opened shelters, and provided essential supplies and financial aid to help Florida communities recover. Recovery is expected to take months, if not longer to restore the state’s economic stability. With hurricane season still ongoing, it remains essential to support those in need.
