While many headlines lately feature Donald Trump’s name, not many know of his role as host of the business-focused reality TV show, ‘The Apprentice’. The 15-season-long production promoted a unique mix of entertainment and education, whilst encouraging and inspiring viewers to think like entrepreneurs. Insightful business principles and demanding competition showcasing real-life workplace difficulties such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership made the show easy to relate to and distinctive.
The show featured roughly 16 contestants per season, who were divided into two corporations (teams) that would compete against each other in various business tasks, such as creating marketing campaigns and managing events. The teams would present their projects to advisors George Ross and Carolyn Keocher, as well as host Donald Trump, where they were evaluated on specific business outcomes, such as profits or meeting client objectives. The team with the weaker approach was deemed the losing team of that round, and one member would be eliminated by Donald Trump exclaiming “YOU’RE FIRED!”, which later became the catchphrase of the show. The winner was the last contestant standing, and they were offered an apprenticeship within the host’s organization, tying into the show’s title.
Donald Trump’s involvement in ‘The Apprentice’ reflects his personality and actions taken as president of the United States by strengthening his urge for power and control. His dominant character and authoritative voice were very likely influenced by his want to increase his profile, also earning him more publicity. Contestants have spoken out against Trump for unreasonably favoring certain people and manipulating outcomes to preserve an image of authority and success. The intriguing premise of ‘The Apprentice’ showed Trump’s true colours and leadership style to an average of 20 million viewers worldwide.
